The Los Angeles Angels have one of the best young shortstops in the Majors in Zach Neto.
At just 25, he has two consecutive seasons with a 5.1 bWAR and 23 or more home runs. Neto's 117 OPS+ ranked second on the Angels last season, four points behind future Hall of Fame outfielder Mike Trout's 121 OPS+ mark.
Trout remains the backbone of the organization, but Neto is arguably now the best position player on the club. Following two long-term extensions for Trout in 2014 and 2019, the Angels seemingly made a loud statement on how they plan to approach Neto's future with the franchise.
Angels have not offered Neto an extension
Per a report from Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times, the Angels have not offered Neto a long-term contract.
"In the year Trout was first eligible for salary arbitration, the Angels signed him to his first long-term contract," wrote Shaikin. "This year, when Neto was first eligible for salary arbitration, the Angels did not make him a formal long-term contract offer, according to Ryan Hamill, co-head of CAA Baseball, which represents Neto."
Shaikin adds that Angels general manager Perry Minasian declined to comment on the topic of an extension for Neto.
“It’s just a matter of being loyal, seeing the growth that we have here," Neto told Shaikin. "If it happens, it happens. I would love to stay here. I would love to be here. But, if it doesn’t, then not every road is meant to be."
