The Islanders have lost their captain.

Anders Lee signed with the Mammoth hours after free agency opened Wednesday on a three-year deal worth $5.4 million in average annual value, according to Elliotte Friedman. It ends a 14-year run with the Islanders that included the final eight as captain.

The Islanders and general manager Mathieu Darche improved their offer late before Lee informed them Tuesday that he planned to test the market, TSN previously reported, and while the door was still left open for a return, the sides couldn’t compromise.

Lee collected 19 goals and 42 points last season, failing to reach at least 20 goals for the first time across a full campaign since 2015-16.

He still delivered production on an Islanders team that collapsed down the stretch of the regular season, fired coach Patrick Roy with four games remaining and missed the playoff cutline by eight points.
