It looks like the Clueless television adaptation is finally picking up some steam.
Alicia Silverstone, who originated the iconic role of Cher Horowitz in the 1995 comedy classic, gave a promising update on how the television adaptation is shaping up during a recent appearance on The Today Show.
Speaking to Savannah Guthrie, Silverstone teased that there was “not much” she could share about the series just yet as it is still in early development.
“I’m really excited about it,” she said. “I think we’re gonna try really hard. The goal is to make it honor what everyone loves about Clueless and Cher. So, we want to honor that, but also bring something fresh and new to it.”
She continued, “And I’m confident that we’ll be able to do that, but we’re in baby stages right now.”
Silverstone will executive produce and reprise her role in the new series. It’s unclear what antics Cher will be getting up to this time, however, a report from Variety notes the series will be a follow-up to the film.
Gossip Girl co-creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will write and executive produce. Amy Heckerling, who wrote and directed the original film, will also serve as an executive producer.
This marks the second time the hit film will be adapted for television. In 1996, Rachel Blanchard starred in the short-lived ABC sitcom that followed Cher and her friends through high school. Silverstone was unable to reprise her role for the series, however, original actors Stacey Dash, Donald Faison, and Elisa Donovan also starred.
The reboot is currently expected to stream on Peacock, which is also where the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Saved by the Bell reboots are also streaming.
Clueless is streaming now on Prime Video.
