The 1,210-kilometer (752 miles) section in Algeria will be built by state-owned Sonatrach and connect to an existing gas pipeline system in the Aoulef region that supplies Europe, Issam Gaba, a director of pipeline studies at the company, said in a presentation on Thursday. The North African country is already a major gas provider to Spain, Italy and France, and is looking to boost energy flows further to meet demand in Europe.

The entire Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline is intended to run 4,128 kilometers through Nigeria, Niger and Algeria. First envisaged in the 1970s, plans for the link were periodically revived in the early 2000s before stalling. The countries backed the link again in 2022 as Russia’s invasion Ukraine created a gas shortage in Europe, according to the US International Trade Administration, which said back then the project might cost about $13 billion.

Another regional project to transport gas to Europe has also progressed in recent months. Morocco’s state-controlled natural resources company is considering raising funds for a pipeline to link fields in Nigeria, Senegal and Mauritania to 10 neighboring African countries including Morocco. The structure is slated to link to the existing Maghreb-Europe Gas Pipeline that connects Morocco to Spain.

The project will also need to take into account ongoing security concerns in Niger, where violent extremism threatens the region.
