Alex Cappa signed a two-year deal worth $11 million with the Las Vegas Raiders this offseason, and though he was expected to be a starter on the offensive line, the veteran guard may be falling behind in the right guard competition.
According to Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Jackson Powers-Johnson started at right guard during Monday's practice. Powers-Johnson has now started at the position for two straight practices.
"Jackson Powers-Johnson gets the nod at starting RG at Raiders camp," Bonsignore wrote on X. "It's the second straight practice he's gotten the starting nod."
With Jordan Meredith taking over as the starting center, Las Vegas has moved Powers-Johnson back to right guard, which is bad news for Cappa.
It's hard to imagine a scenario where Powers-Johnson isn't a starter on the Raiders' offensive line come Week 1, as the Oregon product had a promising rookie campaign and is a future building block for the franchise.
Powers-Johnson taking over as the starting right guard leaves Cappa in an uncertain place. The 30-year-old has played right guard for his entire career, so it's unlikely that he will move to the left side and challenge Dylan Parham for his job at left guard.
There's still a lot of time left for Cappa to find a role on Brennan Carroll's offensive line. However, it looks like the 2020 Super Bowl champion may not be a starter after all.
