Alex Bregman could spurn Red Sox to rejoin Astros in shocking free agency move

The Boston Red Sox signed Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million deal in the offseason. However, his resurgence could make his time with the team short-lived.

Bregman's deal includes an opt-out after the season. However, his great season is setting him to to exercise that opt-out and find a lucrative deal in free agency. The Athletic's Jim Bowden tabbed his former team, the Houston Astros, as a potential suitor for him if he opts out.

"Bregman, who is making $40 million this year and signed for two more years at that rate, will likely opt out of his deal," wrote Bowden. "His free-agent market should be even more robust than last offseason with the Red Sox joined by the (New York) Yankees, (Detroit) Tigers, (Houston) Astros, (Philadelphia) Phillies and even the (Los Angeles) Dodgers; he would be an upgrade for all of them at the hot corner."

The Astros moved on from Bregman after a slight decline from his 2018 and 2019 seasons, when he was an All-Star. Bregman was still playing well, but the Astros clearly did not want to pay top dollar for the version of Bregman they were getting. He opted to sign a deal that allows him to prove himself, and now he is set up for a massive payday.

He made adjustments to his swing and is now on pace to have one of his best seasons at the plate. He is hitting .304 with 11 home runs. The Astros' current third baseman is Isaac Paredes, who is having a solid year himself. However, he could move to second base to allow Bregman to take back over in the hot corner.

There does not seem to be any bad blood between the Astros and Bregman, so a reunion would not be the craziest thing. However, it would be a shock that he would go back to the Astros after they did not believe in him to be the player he is right now, during free agency.
