Newcastle United head into the October international break with mixed emotions after a stop-start beginning to their Premier League campaign that has left them seven points behind Arsenal. Former manager Alan Pardew has now made a bold statement about Eddie Howe’s side that has caught the attention of fans and pundits across England.
The Magpies have endured a turbulent start to the 2025/26 season, winning just two of their first seven league matches, yet there were glimpses of old Newcastle energy during their 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at St James’ Park.
It was the kind of performance that reminded supporters of last season’s intensity when Howe’s men fought fearlessly for every ball and pressed with relentless hunger.
Their Champions League victory over Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in midweek served as another flash of optimism that Eddie Howe man could be getting to their best.
Alan Pardew’s drops his Newcastle United prediction
Speaking to talkSPORT, former Newcastle manager Alan Pardew expressed a surprising level of belief in the club’s potential this season.

He believes team is capable of mounting a serious title challenge despite their current position.
“Newcastle are just picking up the speed a little bit and they’ve got (Yoane) Wissa to come back as well who's going to be a massive help to them in terms of forward momentum," Pardew said.
"I think Newcastle definitely are in the shout for perhaps even winning the league."
“I know that it's hard to think that at the moment. I think they're definitely a contender, I do."
"When I look at the other teams, if I was Eddie with the squad he's got and the momentum, he's got the crowd firmly on his side."
"I'm talking about the manager. He's got enough tools in his little kit bag there (and) been together for a few years now,”
“They've obviously got the cup out of the way last year in terms of winning a trophy, less pressure on them, I think they've got a massive chance.,”
