If there is one thing that Kalen DeBoer needs to do in his Year 2 in Tuscaloosa, apart from making the College Football Playoff, it is winning against Georgia.
Defeating Kirby Smart and continuing the long-cherished dominant record of Nick Saban came as a saving grace and highlight of last season for DeBoer.
Smart has an embarrassing 1-9 record against the Crimson Tide, eight of those coming against Saban, and one against DeBoer.
Now that DeBoer is expected to strike it big this season, a requisite would be making that 10.
However, Smart will hardly come in unprepared a second time, especially when he has a chance to turn the tide in the storied rivalry.
As On3’s JD PicKell believes, DeBoer will need to think outside of the box, something that they haven’t done before, to score this one against Smart.
“Kirby Smart is the best college football coach in the world. The best in the world still get got from time to time. That's what happened last year in Tuscaloosa,” PicKell explained on The Hard Count.
“But very rarely do the best in the world get got twice in the same fashion. Meaning if Kalen DeBoer is going to get Kirby Smart this year in Athens, Georgia, it's going to require a bit of a different approach or a different style or different whatever because Kirby Smart, it's not going to happen the same way.”
The thing that everybody will be on the lookout for in this game is how each of their QBs performs.
Both the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs will have new full-time starting QBs leading their offense.
Georgia will welcome Alabama on Saturday, September 27, at Stanford Stadium.
