WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio is pretty sure about the impact of a 10-time legendary champion. Mysterio mentioned stars like AJ Styles, CM Punk and Jey Uso as to why the influence of the late, great star is still felt to this day.
On Thursday, November 13th, Mysterio penned an emotional letter to Eddie Guerrero on the former WWE champ's 20th death anniversary via The Players' Tribune. The legendary luchador told a lot of stories to his great friend, who passed away in 2005 at the age of 38.
Rey Mysterio also shared several things that Eddie would have loved about pro wrestling today. He was proud of Latino Heat's influence and lasting legacy, especially with how WWE started pushing undersized stars into main eventers.
"As far as your impact, it’s how you helped guys like us — guys who, let’s just say, aren’t giants — get taken seriously as headlining talent. Honestly, maybe the best way to express how much you changed these perceptions, it’s to promise you there are young people reading this letter right now who didn’t know it was ever another way. That’s how fundamental it’s become, the idea that wrestlers at your size, or my size, or any non-traditional size, can main-event a show and be booked at a top level. Guys like AJ Styles, CM Punk, Jey Uso … these are great world champions, who’ve headlined some of the biggest shows ever. And I’m not sure it happens without you," Mysterio wrote. Is Rhea a Bigger Draw Than Brock Lesnar? - Watch Here!
Rey Mysterio remembers Eddie Guerrero 20 years after his death
Time flies fast as Rey Mysterio vividly remembers the moment he became best friends with Eddie Guerrero. Mysterio and Guerrero were mostly foes inside the ring before becoming close like brothers outside of it.
Guerrero vouched for Mysterio during their time in WCW, ensuring that the luchador kept his mask during their feud. In WWE, they became tag team champions and eventual rivals.
It got to a point where Dominik Mysterio got involved in a storyline, battling for his custody at SummerSlam 2005. Rey would win the match, with Guerrero passing away three months later. Rey remembered his friend on The Players' Tribune and discussed the legacy he left behind and how it's still alive and well.
