(Bloomberg) — Air Canada will acquire eight Airbus SE A350-1000 models, with options to double the order, as the carrier seeks to modernize its fleet.

The purchase agreement, if all rights are exercised, would be valued at about $3 billion, based on current aircraft values from analytics firm Ishka Ltd. A first delivery is expected in the second half of 2030, Air Canada said.

Canada’s largest airline said the A350, a model not currently part of its fleet, will strengthen “long-term cost efficiency” and provide a more comfortable experience for passengers. The company announced a program in November to upgrade some plane interiors and technology systems, and a new cabin standard is expected to be released later this year.

The A350-1000 is a twin-aisle widebody aircraft that will have slightly fewer than 400 seats in Air Canada’s configuration.

The plane will replace “our older Airbus A330 aircraft that by the end of the decade will get to 30 years of age,” Chief Commercial Officer Mark Galardo said in an interview. The aircraft, which has among the largest ranges in the industry with about 9,000 nautical miles, is “the superior product when you think of ultra-long haul operations” and has “very strong cargo performance,” he added.

Air Canada currently has a fleet of 85 widebody aircraft, Galardo said, and the purchase will add to an order book of 14 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners, 30 Airbus A321XLRs and 23 Airbus A220s.
