The Carolina Panthers will need to take a different approach.
In 2025, the Panthers entered their prolonged bye week beat up, but on a Week 13 high. Out of the playoff picture for the previous eight NFL seasons, they stunned the Jared Verse-backed Los Angeles Rams, 31-28, at Bank of America Stadium.
It was the second major upset the Panthers pulled off in about a month. In Week 9, they upended the Green Bay Packers, 16-13, at Lambeau Field.
As they entered their bye week, the last possible time a team could take off, they trailed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by a half-game in the NFC South division.
"We always have belief," Panthers quarterback Bryce Young said during his post-game news conference. "We know we have what it takes in this building. We don't worry about the outside opinions."
Added coach Dave Canales: "Our best football is still in front of us and our goal is to find it."
Was it, though?
The Panthers (8-9) dropped three of their final four games, but earned their first division title since 2015 via tiebreaker.
Panthers will have early bye week in 2026
Canales said during Monday's teleconference that the Panthers will alter their pre-season processes, preparing for next season's Week 5 bye. In stark contrast to 2025, the Panthers' schedule calls for the earliest possible bye week next season.
The Panthers will be off following their Sunday night showcase game against the visiting Detroit Lions. They return for a Week 6 encounter at the Philadelphia Eagles.
"The early bye week fo us, looking at it from a positive lens, it's after you get a couple of games under your belt, you start to see the things that you were practicing and hoping to emerge coming out of training camp, the emphasis, and all your different phases," Canales said. "You have a quick snapshot four games in to be able to collect reliable data to say, 'Is this something that's actually good for us, or is this something that we may need to back off on a little bit."
The schedule doesn't affect defensive tackle Derrick Brown, but it does his family unit.
"Mindset's the same," Brown told Panthers.com. "That's more of a wife question, so she can plan vacation."
