Aaron Glenn reveals why Jets won't announce starting quarterback for Week 8

The New York Jets are heading into a pivotal Week 8 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. Sitting at 0-7, the Jets need to secure a win this week; otherwise, they'll be 0-8 heading into their bye week and winless heading into the trade deadline.

It's been a rough first year for Aaron Glenn, and he's faced some tough challenges this season. The biggest hurdle for Glenn has been his team's starting quarterback. Justin Fields hasn't been great, creating a quarterback controversy between Fields and Tyrod Taylor.

Now, with Week 8 on the horizon, the Jets have yet to name a starter. Glenn has been asked all week about the team's starter for Week 8, but he's kept his lips tight and isn't revealing the starter. When asked why he isn't announcing the starter, Glenn stated that it's all for a competitive advantage.

Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic shared Glenn's reasoning, and while it's frustrating from an outsider's perspective, it's exactly what Glenn wants.

Aaron Glenn said there was a game when he was the Lions DC where the Packers wouldn’t announce their QB that week and Glenn thought it gave Green Bay a competitive advantage.

Why he said he doesn’t understand why everyone is so confused about this approach he’s taking.

"Aaron Glenn said there was a game when he was the Lions DC where the Packers wouldn't announce their QB that week and Glenn thought it gave Green Bay a competitive advantage." Rosenblatt shared. "Why he said he doesn't he understand why everyone is so confused about this approach he's taking?"

The Jets head coach isn't making his starting quarterback known to get a competitive advantage over the Bengals. This uncertainty is designed to make game planning more of a challenge.

Part of why it works in the Jets case is the differing playstyle of the two quarterbacks who could start in Week 8. Fields is a scrambling quarterback who doesn't attack down the field much, while Taylor isn't as mobile but has more downfield passing ability.

By having no set starter, the Jets aren't allowing the Bengals' defense to fully prepare for one or the other.

Fields hasn't been great this season, including a total of -10 net passing yards in Week 6 against the Denver Broncos. He was also benched in Week 7 for Taylor after going six of 12 for 46 yards passing.

Taylor, meanwhile, hasn't been much better. On 22 passing attempts in relief of Fields against the Carolina Panthers, he had 10 completions for 126 yards and two interceptions. He did have a good game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, throwing for 197 yards and two touchdowns and one interception on 36 attempts.

The Jets aren't naming a starter for Week 8 in hopes of gaining a competitive advantage, and Glenn has remained steadfast in his silence about the position.

With roughly 48 hours until the Jets play the Bengals in Week 8, no starting quarterback has been revealed for the Jets. Fields or Taylor could be the starter, but for now, only a few people in the Jets building know who the starter will be.
