Injuries are the worst part of football. No one wants to see it happen to players, especially not in training camp. Unfortunately, in a sport as physical as football, accidents that get players hurt are inevitable. The New York Jets recently got bit by the injury bug when defensive tackle and three-time Pro Bowler Quinnen Williams went down in Thursday’s practice and did not return. He was not present the next day, either.
After Friday’s practice, head coach Aaron Glenn spoke to the media and gave everyone an update. It’s a strained left calf for Williams that will keep him out for 1-2 weeks of practice before he can take the field again. Glenn does not seem overly concerned about the setback, leading one to believe that the 1-2 week timeline is firm rather than a mere hope-for-the-best scenario.
Additionally, Glenn pointed out that this is an injury Williams has suffered in the past, forcing him to miss one game in 2022. While some fans might be concerned about an old injury popping up again, apparently the Jets are taking a positive outlook on it, seeing as how Williams has gone through this before and should know exactly how to rehab it and when it should be back to 100%.
All in all, the Jets avoided another major injury scare that could have derailed the 2025 season. On Day 2 of training camp last Thursday, quarterback Justin Fields was carted off the practice field back to the facilities, which sent Gang Green into an instant panic. Much to everyone’s relief, the diagnosis came back as a dislocated toe, and not the big toe. Fields was held out of team drills for Friday but was right back in the thick of practice by Saturday.
The Jets are going to need all of their star players to avoid such injuries going forward. The new regime in New York wants to set the franchise on the road to ending the Jets’ 14-year playoff drought, and a winning season would be a good start.
