With her newest movie, Sydney Sweeney wants the world to know about her struggle with domestic violence. She has made this known silently, starring in a biographical sports drama, Christy (2025), which is based on the life of domestic violence and how it emotionally affects one, in her case, to the utmost personal level.
The movie, made by David Michôd, follows the life of the first woman boxer, Christy Martin, who was the victim of a near-fatal attack by the husband she had been abused by for years in 2010.
On the 27th of October, 2025, Sydney Sweeney, in a discussion with Variety, confessed that using the movie as her mouthpiece, she wants the audience to be aware of the violence that takes place at home and at the same time to start an important conversation about it.
"It’s a very personal issue that’s important to me, and I hope that through Christy and her story, it can raise more awareness," she explained.The actress did not reveal much about her personal history but answered,
"It's personal."At the same time, attending the 2025 Power of Women event organized by Variety, Sweeney will be awarded alongside other artists. She was the one who put the spotlight on the National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence as her preferred charity.

"For Christy, the ring was her escape. It’s almost like you’re a caged animal inside this ring, but it’s a place where she feels the most free," she told Variety in the same interview.Sydney Sweeney, comparing her life with the character, also said,
"I am definitely a caged animal in a sense. Acting is my ring. It’s where I feel freedom. The set is where everything else goes quiet."Presently, Christy Martin, being 57 years old, is still committed to the cause of domestic violence survivors, and as a show of gratitude, she recommends Sweeney's devotion to portraying her story in the right way publicly.

What is Christy about and who stars in it?
Christy (2025) is an American biographical sports drama directed by David Michôd and co-written by Michôd and Mirrah Foulkes. The movie covers the life story of the American female boxer, Christy Martin, starting with her coming from a small West Virginia town, through to her being one of the most famous female boxers in America in the 90s.
The film also deals with the ups and downs of her marriage to her manager-turned-husband, James Jim Martin, who in 2010 violently attacked her; he stabbed and shot her in their home.
After the attack, Christy Martin managed to escape death, and later on, she testified against her husband who was found guilty of attempted second-degree murder with a firearm and aggravated battery in 2012.
In the movie Christy Martin, Sydney Sweeney is in the lead role. James V. Martin, the husband and trainer who is abusive toward her, is played by Ben Foster.
Supporting the film are Merritt Wever as Christy’s strict mother, Joyce Salters, Ethan Embry as her father, John Salters, and Jess Gabor as Rosie, a character based on Martin’s high school friend Sherry Lusk.
Katy O’Brien is Lisa Holewyne, Christy’s most challenging opponent in the boxing ring, while Chad L. Coleman is acting as the famous boxing promoter Don King. Besides that, the cast members are Tony Cavalero, Bill Kelly, Bryan Hibbard, and Jake Maloney.
Through September 5, 2025, at the Toronto International Film Festival in the Special Presentations section, Christy made its debut and was met with a strong early talk mainly for Sweeney's performance.
On November 7, 2025, the film will be available for viewing in cinemas with Black Bear Pictures distributing it.
