"A monster return" - MLB insider sends warning as Mets-linked blockbuster involving Nick Pivetta, Mason Miller faces steep reality

The New York Mets failed to make the postseason this year after a remarkable capitulation in the last three months of the season. The team is aiming to put the setback behind them by assembling a roster capable of contending next season.

Since the offseason began, the Mets have been linked with power-hitters Kyle Schwarber and Pete Alonso. However, Steve Cohen's team has seemingly turned their attention to the pitching staff after failing to retain All-Star closer Edwin Diaz and Tyler Rogers.

With the team short on arms, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported that the Mets are reportedly interested in acquiring Nick Pivetta and Mason Miller from the San Diego Padres.

"The Padres’ players in the talks include right-hander Nick Pivetta, outfielder Ramón Laureano and relievers Mason Miller, Adrian Morejon and Jeremiah Estrada," Rosenthal reported.

However, Rosenthal warned that a trade package for either Pivetta or Miller will not come cheaply.

"A blockbuster involving, say, Pivetta, Laureano and Miller, would go a long way to changing the Mets’ current narrative," Rosenthal wrote. "But it would require a monster return, and even then, Preller might be better off making separate deals."

Pivetta signed a four-year, $55 million contract with the Padres in February. He can opt out of his contract with two years and $32 million remaining at the end of next season.

Padres listening to offers for Mason Miller amid rumored interest from Mets

Padres flamethrower Mason Miller has emerged as one of the most coveted relievers in the game over the last two seasons. Miller, who grabbed attention with his 100mph fastballs during his All-Star season with the Athletics in 2024, was sent to San Diego in a blockbuster trade at the trade deadline this year.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Padres are listening to offers for the young flamethrower. However, Heyman noted that it will take a considerable offer to prize Miller away from the NL West team.
