The San Diego Padres had one of the busiest trade deadline periods in baseball. From their blockbuster addition of Mason Miller to the team, filling major holes on the roster, A.J. Preller was a busy general manager at the deadline.
After the deadline passed, Preller spoke about his moves, and in a piece from Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Preller revealed bold expectations for his team after his deadline pickups.
"The expectation is to go win a wing, go win a championship," Preller said. "That's the goal we set out at the start of spring training. Last year, we fell short. Hopefully, we learned from that."
Their big-ticket acquisition was Miller, but the Padres added a lot of other interesting players who will help the team this season. The Padres added a new starting catcher in Freddy Fermin from the Kansas City Royals, a much-needed move.
San Diego also brought in Ramon Laureano and Ryan O'Hearn from the Baltimore Orioles to take over in left field and first base, while also adding Nestor Cortes from the Milwaukee Brewers. They also added Will Wagner from the Toronto Blue Jays.

It was a busy deadline for Preller, and he nearly made another blockbuster move in trading Dylan Cease to the Houston Astros. But such a move didn't happen as the Astros balked at Preller's asking price.
All of the moves Preller made have the Padres' general manager expecting the team to make a postseason run, and specifically, to win a World Series championship.
It's a bold, but not unexpected stance for Preller to take. After making such aggressive trades at the deadline, anything short of a deep postseason run would be a disappointment.
San Diego, sitting in the third wild card spot in the NL, but only three games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for the top spot in the NL West, is in a position to make a run. A run that Preller expects the team will make following his shopping spree at the deadline.
