A.J. Brown Patriots debut grades: Drake Maye's new star WR shows flashes before injury derails opener

1 hour ago 3

No move made by the reigning AFC champions this offseason was as consequential as their blockbuster move for a star receiver. And on Wednesday, the Patriots finally got their first glimpses of A.J. Brown officially wearing red, white and blue — though it only lasted 2.5 quarters.

Brown made his long-awaited debut for New England in a Super Bowl rematch against the Seahawks, but exited early due to an ankle injury in the third quarter. Still, as a receiver who Drake Maye likely would've benefited from having around in February's title matchup, Brown still made a limited impact for the Patriots in Week 1.

There weren't a ton of fireworks in his team debut — and Brown's health will be a significant storyline worth monitoring — but he did help guide New England to some offensive success early in an otherwise defensive matchup.

Here's a look at Brown's Patriots debut and a grade for his performance prior to his injury.

A.J. Brown stats today

  • Receptions: 3
  • Yards: 26
  • Yards Per Catch: 8.7
  • TDs: 0

It was a dud of an offensive performance for both teams in the NFL's season opener — despite only totaling 26 yards in 2.5 quarters played, Brown led the Patriots in receiving.

New England primarily moved the ball through its run game and an advantage in the penalty department. Still, Brown's three catches contributed to a win, even if he didn't nearly post the kind of numbers anticipated for one of the NFL's best receivers.

A.J. Brown highlights vs. Seahawks

Facing a stingy Seattle defense, Brown didn't have any explosive plays in Week 1 prior to his injury. But he did help the Patriots move the chains a few times in key moments.

His first catch with New England was a wide-open play that picked up five yards:

Brown's most impactful catch came on a 3rd & 3, moving the chains for New England for 14 yards:

A.J. Brown Patriots debut grade vs. Seahawks

  • Grade: C-

All things told, between his injury, just three catches and lack of big plays in a defensive slugfest, Brown's Patriots debut was a disappointment. He was expected to provide a level of explosion to New England's offense and a 1-on-1 ability that Mike Vrabel's offense simply didn't have last season, and that didn't show on Wednesday.

Granted, Brown's quiet outing also came against a dynamic defense that routinely shut down opposing star receivers in 2025. Yards are hard to come by against the Seahawks, especially when they're playing in Seattle — and Brown couldn't find much open room against some of the league's best defensive backs.

Brown also deserves some credit for setting up the Patriots' lone touchdown of the first half, drawing a pass interference call on Drake Maye's deep ball to the end zone. Without him, New England may never have gotten on the board:

All things considered, the Patriots' new star receiver, assuming he can get back on the field soon, should be much more impactful as the season progresses.

The first step is making sure Brown gets healthy again after his ankle injury. But after a quiet debut, New England certainly has much higher hopes for its WR1 in the weeks to come.
