76ers' VJ Edgecombe scored most points in NBA debut since Wilt Chamberlain in 1959

Very few players have debuted in the NBA like VJ Edgecombe did on Wednesday night for the Philadelphia 76ers.

The No. 3 overall pick out of Baylor stole the show in his initial foray into the league, showing the Boston Celtics and the rest of the basketball world that he'll be a force to be reckoned with.

Only two players have ever scored more points than Edgecombe did in his debut, and he'll be even happier, because it came in a narrow 76ers win.

VJ Edgecombe stats tonight

The final stats for VJ Edgecombe in his NBA debut for the 76ers were fantastic:

  • 34 points
  • 13-26 FG
  • 5-13 3FG
  • 3-6 FT
  • 7 rebounds
  • 3 assists
  • 1 steal

Edgecombe certainly wasn't shy about letting it fly.

He scored 14 points in the first quarter, which broke LeBron James' record for 1Q points in an NBA debut.

Most points in NBA debut

Edgecombe became one of five players to score 32 points or more in an NBA debut.

He's the first to do so since 1974.

The top-five on that list is led by, who else, Wilt Chamberlain, who is the most recent player to score more than Edgecombe's 34.

Here's the top five:

  • Wilt Chamberlain, 43 points (1959)
  • Frank Selvy, 35 points (1954)
  • VJ Edgecombe, 34 points (2025)
  • Maurice Stokes, 32 points (1955)
  • John Drew, 32 points (1974)

This broke the 76ers record, which was held by Allen Iverson at 30 points (although Chamberlain did score his 43 points for a Philadelphia team, the Warriors).

The most points in a debut since 2000 came from Gordan Giricek in 2002, with 29.

Edgecombe will remember this one for a long time.
