Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid has been out since Feb. 22 due to a knee injury.

After consulting with doctors and specialists to determine the next steps of his recovery, Embiid will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee next week, a team official told ESPN's Shams Charania. Embiid experienced persistent swelling and pain in his troublesome knee.

"The procedure is being done with the goal of reducing the symptoms Embiid has been experiencing, and will allow him to perform at a higher level, sources said," Charania relayed.

Charania also shared that Embiid will be re-evaluated in six weeks and is expected to make a full recovery.

This will be the second surgery on Embiid's left knee in just over a year, as he dealt with a torn meniscus last season. Embiid has suited up in only 58 games since winning league MVP in 2023.

The 76ers have experienced a disappointing all-around season, as they've dealt with injuries to forward Paul George and guard Jared McCain in addition to Embiid's ailment.

The hope for Philadelphia is that Embiid can recover from the multiple injuries he's suffered over the last couple of years and return to his dominant self, and George has a bounce-back season next year.

Assuming guard Quentin Grimes sticks around, Embiid may have a significantly lesser load to handle moving forward, especially with guard Tyrese Maxey also establishing himself as one of the league's best scorers.

A healthy Sixers team featuring Embiid, George, Maxey, Grimes, and McCain can still do some damage each night, but their ability to stay on the court will be key.
