76ers' LeBron James' high school teammate is now running the Cavaliers after promotion

The Cleveland Cavaliers have been very active this summer in terms of getting the guys they want. A big reason for this is to chase a championship, as they believe they have the duo to do it.

James Harden was acquired at the last trade deadline. This summer, he took a team-friendly deal to help with free agency.

“Free agent James Harden agreed to a new three-year, $97 million contract to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers, with a player option for 2028-29 and a trade kicker, agents Mike Silverman, Troy Payne and Brandon Grier of Equity Sports told ESPN on Thursday. Currently, just two players in NBA history have eclipsed the $500 million mark in career earnings: Philadelphia's LeBron James and Houston's Kevin Durant. Harden sits at $414 million and would join the exclusive club after completing this new deal,” ESPN’s Shams Charania wrote.

The moves haven’t stopped there for Cleveland. On Friday, they promoted Brandon Weems to general manager.

“The Cleveland Cavaliers are promoting executive Brandon Weems to General Manager under President Koby Altman, sources tell ESPN. Weems has been in the Cavaliers organization for the last decade, rising through scouting and personnel roles before becoming assistant GM in 2022, and now GM,” Charania posted.

Weems was a teammate of LeBron James during their high school days. His journey with the Cavaliers started as a scout in 2015, and he has climbed through the ranks since then. Weems stayed faithful to the Cavaliers throughout his entire professional career, and it has paid off.

Cleveland will now have someone new in charge, and looking at his successful career so far, they seem to be in great hands. This is a great move, as another one of James’ high school teammates is making a big impact in basketball.

After four years as assistant GM, Weems finally gets the role all to himself. He is a great basketball mind who has been through every step, so he knows what it will take to lead the Cavaliers in the right direction.
