Many believed the LeBron James sweepstakes would come down to the two franchises that are no strangers to employing the four-time NBA champion: the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers.
James spent four seasons with the Heat (2010-14) and 11 total seasons with the Cavaliers (two stints), winning three combined championships with the storied Eastern Conference organizations.
However, James shocked the NBA world by signing with the Tyrese Maxey- and Jaylen Brown-led Philadelphia 76ers on Friday morning (two-year, $8 million deal). Naturally, there are questions regarding James’ eldest son Bronny’s trade status, as it isn’t out of the realm of possibility for the 76ers to acquire the 21-year-old Los Angeles Lakers guard to appease their new superstar forward.
NBA reporter Evan Sidery seems to believe that a trade for Bronny wouldn’t be challenging for Philadelphia to complete.
“The Sixers can easily acquire Bronny James, if LeBron wants him to follow along,” Sidery wrote on X/Twitter. “Philadelphia can offer the Lakers a future 2nd-round pick for Bronny by absorbing his minimum salary into their available $2.3 million TPE.”
Will the Lakers express a willingness to trade Bronny after two seasons? According to a recent report from The Athletic’s Dan Woike, Los Angeles values the former second-round pick and would love to retain him for the foreseeable future.
Woike even noted that LeBron’s decision to leave Los Angeles and search for greener pastures ‘Isn't viewed as anything related to Bronny James' standing with the team’. Does that mean Bronny is destined to remain a Laker for 2026-27 and beyond?
Not necessarily, but it shows that the 17-time NBA champions aren’t prepared to offload the USC product to Philadelphia just because his father is now a part of the organization.
