With fall camp just opening in just days for Alabama, what five storylines should fans pay attention to this upcoming season that will be crucial to the Tide’s success?
Quarterback
We all know that most fans are excited to see how the QB competition unfolds in fall camp. Although the consensus is that Ty Simpson will probably start for the Tide, backups Keelon Russell and Austin Mack may make a hard push for the starting position, so don’t be surprised if this quarterback race tightens up before kickoff against Florida State.
Offensive Line
Coming into this season, more experts are saying this might be the best offensive line that Alabama has had in a long time. The OL didn’t play badly last year; however, they were inconsistent at times, which hurt the offense. If the offensive line is as dominant as many think it can be, this will be good news for this offense.
Secondary
The Alabama secondary is going to be one of the best in the country; the only question is, can they stay healthy? The Alabama defense has had issues over the years with staying healthy, but when they are healthy, as they were toward the end of last season, this defense can shut down almost any offense in the country, and the key was the secondary staying healthy.
Special Teams
Special teams for Alabama used to be pretty good; lately, however, special teams haven’t been so special. Hopefully, the tide, so to speak, is about to change. Conor Talty is going to take over the place-kicking duties this year, and the coaches seem to be impressed with him. As for the punter, Alex Asparuhov and Blake Doud will battle it out in camp. Doud is a transfer from Colorado School of Mines, and Asparuhov is a highly rated freshman coming out of high school.
Schedule
Depending on who you ask, Alabama’s schedule seems to be in their favor with LSU and Tennessee both at home, while they have road games at Georgia, South Carolina, and Auburn. They also have Vanderbilt and Oklahoma at home as well, two games they lost on the road last year. Alabama struggled on the road last year but went undefeated at home. Most of the teams on this year’s schedule are expected to be pretty good, so this may be a tough er schedule than most think.
