49ers named potential landing spot for former 2-time Pro Bowler

The San Francisco 49ers have been upgrading their defense throughout the offseason, and one of the most significant moves they made to the unit was hiring new defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.

Saleh was the team's defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2020, before being named the head coach of the New York Jets, a position he held for three and a half seasons.

Now that Saleh is back with the 49ers, the defense may get back to being one of the best in the game, but they could use a little more help in the secondary.

On Monday, seven-year veteran and two-time Pro Bowler cornerback Jaire Alexander was released from the Green Bay Packers, and Jared Dubin from CBS Sports thinks he could be a good fit with the 49ers.

"The Niners lost Charvarius Ward in free agency this offseason and currently seem likely to start either journeyman Tre Brown or third-round pick Upton Stout opposite Deommodore Lenoir at one of their corner spots. Bringing in another veteran -- even one with injury issues -- is an idea that has some merit, especially considering how much cap room the 49ers have on their hands," Dubin wrote. "According to Over the Cap, only the Patriots have more cap space than the Niners' current $46.6 million in room."

It would be a smart move for the 49ers to bring Alexander in and see what he has left in the tank, and if he can't play any longer, they didn't waste any draft capital on him.
