49ers hopeful Brock Purdy can return in Week 8, but won't rush him back

The San Francisco 49ers are one of the most banged-up teams in the NFL this season. Nick Bosa and Fred Warner are done for the year, and they have had multiple injuries to nearly all of their wide receivers this season. And that's only scratching the surface.

The most prominent injury is the turf toe issue Brock Purdy is dealing with. He's only played in two games this season, one of which came in Week 4 when he aggravated the injury, and is now out for Week 7 against the Atlanta Falcons.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network shared an important update on Purdy's injury. As Tom Pelissero explained, the 49ers have some hope their star quarterback could return in Week 8, but they are also being very careful not to rush him back.

"Now, there is at least hope that Purdy could potentially be back as soon as next week," Pelissero reports. "He has not yet practiced in full, though, since aggravating that injury when he got back onto the field in Week 4."

San Francisco is holding out hope Purdy can return in Week 8, which would be just his third game this season. With a Week 14 bye, the 49ers are still a ways away from an extra week of rest and recovery for Purdy.

Mac Jones will get another starter, and while he's been solid in replacement of Purdy, the Week 6 offense stalled a bit against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, resulting in the 49ers' second loss of the year. Despite Purdy's injury, the 49ers are still 4-2 atop the NFC West.

But when Purdy is back, it's going to come when the star quarterback is back to full strength. The 49ers aren't going to rush him back, a decision made a lot easier thanks to Jones playing well in Purdy's absence so far this season.

"The goal for everybody involved is to make sure this is not something that is going to end up lingering," Pelissero reports, "they're going to keep Purdy off the field until he is able to be full strength."

Purdy is out for the 49ers' Week 7 matchup against the Falcons, and while he is in play to return for their Week 8matchup against the Houston Texans, San Francisco isn't going to rush him back and risk him re-aggravating his injury like he did in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

For now, the 49ers are holding out hope that Purdy will be ready to go in Week 7, but he's not a lock to be back in Week 8, as San Francisco is being cautious with his recovery from turf toe.
