The San Francisco 49ers will face their division rival, the Los Angeles Rams, in the season opener. There are still some important questions surrounding the status of Nick Bosa and George Kittle as they try to make it back in time to play.
Kittle suffered his injury during the playoffs last season, tearing his Achilles against the Philadelphia Eagles.
“Niners tight end George Kittle suffered a torn Achilles in the second quarter of Sunday's 23-19 wild-card win over the Eagles, head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters postgame,” NFL.com’s Bobby Kownack wrote.
Earlier in the week, Kittle received a major update on his chances of playing in the season opener. He traveled with the 49ers to Australia with the possibility of making his return.
“Kittle, who was activated from the physically unable to perform list on Aug. 23, is recovering from a torn right Achilles suffered during the Jan. 11 playoff win against the Philadelphia Eagles. He will make the trip after two positive days of practice and is trending in the right direction to play in the season opener, per sources,” ESPN wrote.
On Saturday, San Francisco cut tight end Brayden Willis. CBS Sports’ John Breech believes that move could very well mean Kittle will play in Week 1.
“The only thing worse than getting cut by an NFL team is getting cut* after *flying 16 hours to Australia, and that's exactly what happened to 49ers tight end Brayden Willis on Saturday. From a roster standpoint, the 49ers' decision to cut Willis is definitely an interesting one. Since Willis is a tight end, the move could signal that the team is extremely confident in George Kittle's chances of playing on Thursday night -- Friday morning in Melbourne -- against the Rams,” Breech wrote.
This is exciting news for the 49ers, as Kittle is a huge part of their offense. Whether he will be placed on a restriction remains unknown, but the possibility of him playing is still a great sign for San Francisco.
Willis had made $2 million throughout his career up to this point. The 49ers are hoping to start the season on the right foot with a win over the Rams, and getting Kittle back on the field would be huge for their chances.
