49ers could trade third-year DB during 2026 NFL Draft for Kyle Shanahan reason

The San Francisco 49ers are coming out of the first few weeks of free agency with a lot of big wins on the open market, and with one trade they made with the Dallas Cowboys.

Osa Odighizuwa joined the 49ers from the Cowboys, and they also signed Mike Evans, Christian Kirk, and Dre Greenlaw to free agent contracts. Now the attention turns to the NFL Draft, where the 49ers could get active with more than just draft picks.

As Alex Kay of Bleacher Report proposed, the 49ers could wind up trading away 2024 draft pick Renardo Green during the 2026 NFL Draft, thanks in part to a Kyle Shanahan reason from the 2025 playoffs.

49ers could trade Renardo Green during '26 NFL Draft

"The San Francisco 49ers have a tough decision to make regarding Renardo Green," Kay writes. "The cornerback has shown glimpses of the talent that made him a second-round pick in the 2024 draft and even emerged as a full-time starter last year, but his inconsistencies have also set the team back."

Last season, the 49ers' cornerback selected 64th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, started 14 games for the 49ers. Despite playing more, he recorded three fewer passes defended than he did last year, to go with zero interceptions despite one in seven starts last year.

Although his 80.0 passer rating was a slight improvement from his 88.2 rating in his rookie year, Green's playoff performance did not sit well with the 49ers, as Kay noted.

"Head coach Kyle Shanahan was visibly frustrated with Green during the team's playoff matchup against the rival Seattle Seahawks, at one point pulling him from the game and chewing him out on the sidelines," Kay writes.

After such an incident, it's hardly a surprise that Green's name has popped up in trade rumors. Even though John Lynch has tried shutting down those rumors, it would still not be a complete surprise to see him on the move this offseason.

And in the 2026 NFL Draft, whether it's due to a team missing out on their desired cornerback in the draft, or if the 49ers want to move up and use Green as a big chip in the deal, a trade is very feasible.

While Shanahan wouldn't be the cause of this possible trade, his sideline chewing-out of Green certainly doesn't help the 2024 second-rounder stay in San Francisco.

The 49ers could get something good in return for Green, further making the case for the 49ers to consider a deal.

Fans should keep an eye out for more rumors on Green, as this third-year cornerback could be on the move this offseason, and potentially during the draft.
