Ace India pacer Jasprit Bumrah stole the spotlight with the ball on Day 1 (Friday, November 14) of the first Test in the two-match series against South Africa. Opting to bat first, South Africa’s openers Aiden Markram (31) and Ryan Rickelton (23) put together a 57-run opening stand. However, once Bumrah removed both batters, the momentum swung entirely in India’s favor.

Bumrah produced a spectacular performance, finishing with figures of 5/27 from 14 overs as the Proteas were bowled out for 159 in 55 overs. In reply, India ended the day at 37/1 after 20 overs, still trailing by 122 runs, with KL Rahul (13) and Washington Sundar (6) at the crease.

It was a day dominated by India, with Bumrah’s five-wicket haul taking center stage. Here, we highlight four milestones achieved by the 31-year-old on Day 1 of the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

#1 Matched Bhagwat Chandrasekhar for fifth-most Test five-fers by an Indian

As Jasprit Bumrah returned with figures of 5/27, he notched his 16th five-wicket haul in 51 Tests, equaling Bhagwat Chandrasekhar (58 matches) for fifth place among Indian bowlers in Test cricket.

At the top, Ravichandran Ashwin leads with 37 five-wicket hauls in 106 Tests, followed by Anil Kumble with 35 in 132 matches, Harbhajan Singh with 25 in 103 Tests, and Kapil Dev with 23 in 131 Tests.

#2 Jasprit Bumrah became the Asian bowler with most five-wicket hauls against SENA nations

Jasprit Bumrah’s impressive performance with the ball helped him surpass former Pakistan pacer Wasim Akram, becoming the Asian bowler with the most five-wicket hauls against SENA nations. Akram had taken 12 in 75 innings, while Bumrah now has 13 in 80 innings.

Among these, five came against England and four each against South Africa and Australia.

#3 Bumrah first in 17 years to claim five wickets on Day 1 of a red-ball Test in India

Jasprit Bumrah delivered a stunning spell on Friday in Kolkata, becoming the first bowler in 17 years to take a five-wicket haul on the first day of a red-ball Test in India.

The last bowler to achieve this feat was South Africa’s legendary pacer Dale Steyn, who returned figures of 5/23 in eight overs at Ahmedabad in 2008, when India were bowled out for 76. The Proteas went on to win the match by an innings and 90 runs.

#4 Overtook Mohammed Shami to become India’s fifth-highest Test wicket-taker among pacers

As Jasprit Bumrah claimed five wickets in his 51st Test, his career tally reached 231 wickets, surpassing Mohammed Shami (229 wickets in 64 matches) to become India’s fifth-highest Test wicket-taker among pacers.

At the top of the list, 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev leads with 434 wickets in 131 Tests. Ishant Sharma is second with 311 wickets in 105 matches, followed by Zaheer Khan, who also took 311 wickets but in 92 Tests. Javagal Srinath ranks fourth with 236 wickets in 67 red-ball matches.
