I’ve never gotten a tattoo. Not because I have anything against them — some of the best art I’ve ever seen has been on someone’s skin — but because of one stubborn problem: nothing has ever felt permanent enough.
Every time I imagined a design on my own arm, all I could think was would I still want this in forty years? And the answer was always no. So I stayed blank.
Then I came across Jonny Hall‘s work, and for the first time I get it.
Jonny does something I didn’t even know was possible: he uses special UV-reactive ink, so his designs carry a whole second life you can’t see in normal light. In daylight they read as amazing tattoos on their own — but switch on a UV light and suddenly they glow, revealing hidden details, colors, and entire layers that were quietly there the whole time.
It’s like the tattoo has a secret it only shows you when the moment’s right.
There’s something about that I can’t stop thinking about. A piece of art that’s beautiful in the open and hiding more underneath — it almost feels designed for someone like me, who needs a tattoo to be more than just one thing.
I’m not saying I’ve booked an appointment. But for the first time, I’m looking at the calendar.
