The third match of the WWE Saturday Night's Main Event XLI card featured a Triple Threat contest between Dominik Mysterio, Penta, and Rusev for the Intercontinental Championship.

The entire match was a back-and-forth treat for the fans as all three stars involved gave their best inside the squared circle. At one point, it looked like Rusev had won the bout when the bell rang while The Bulgarian Brute had Penta locked in his Accolade Clutch, but it was another heel antic from "Dirty" Dom's playbook.

The former United States Champion went berserk on Mysterio and dragged him back while punishing him. Penta snatched the ring hammer from Dom's hand, and just as he was about to hit The King of Luchadors, he dodged, causing the hammer to connect with Rusev's head.

"Dirty" Dom shoved Cero Miedo into the corner post, climbed the turnbuckle, connected his Five-Star frog splash on Rusev, and retained his title. In this article, we will look at three possible reasons why Mysterio retained his WWE IC Title at SNME.

#3. Dominik Mysterio's supermatch on the horizon

There has been chatter all over the internet about Mysterio facing John Cena. Some recent reports even suggest that the 28-year-old star might eventually lose his IC Title to The Last Real Champion.

His supermatch against The Cenation Leader might be why Dominik retained his Intercontinental Championship.

#2. WWE wanted to keep the title on The Judgment Day member

The King of Luchadors has been riding a massive wave of success since turning heel and especially winning the two championships. He is undoubtedly one of the biggest heels on the roster.

Comparing his current star power to Penta and Rusev, "Dirty" Dom is a bigger superstar, and the promotion keeping the IC Title on him was perfect, as he is a major ambassador for the brand.

#1. No credible opponents for the challenger

After thoroughly analyzing the current contenders for Dom's Intercontinental Championship, neither Penta nor Rusev has any storylines behind them or any names they could use to build a box-office-worthy feud.

Whereas Mysterio has major WWE stories he could build upon, including a potential feud with John Cena, The Judgment Day breakup angle, his father Rey Mysterio's potential return, and more.
