3 potential offseason trade destinations for Maple Leafs' Oliver Ekman-Larsson

1 hour ago 2

There was an expectation that the Toronto Maple Leafs would trade defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson ahead of the 2026 NHL trade deadline.

The Maple Leafs scratched the veteran blueliner for roster-related reasons during trade deadline week, which is normally an indicator that a move could be on the way. Yet Ekman-Larsson was not traded and will finish the campaign with the Maple Leafs.

While Ekman-Larsson did not get traded by the deadline, the possibility of him being moved during the summer remains. The Maple Leafs are retooling, and the 34-year-old defenseman could land them a nice return during the offseason, given that he is in the middle of a strong season, as evidenced by his eight goals and 35 points in 63 games.

Because of this, let’s take a look at three teams that could look to trade for Ekman-Larsson during the summer.

Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins have been linked to Ekman-Larsson several times over the years, and that included leading up to this year’s deadline. With this, it would not be surprising in the slightest if they kicked tires on Ekman-Larsson during the summer.

With Ekman-Larsson capable of playing on the right side, he could slot well on the Bruins’ second pairing with Hampus Lindholm if acquired. It is no secret that the Bruins need an upgrade in that spot of their lineup, so they could be a team to keep an eye on when it comes to Ekman-Larsson.

Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers are another team that have been connected to Ekman-Larsson, and it is easy to understand why. The Oilers should look to upgrade their blueline in the offseason, as it is currently one of their biggest weaknesses. Bringing in a veteran like Ekman-Larsson could help change things on that front.

If the Oilers landed Ekman-Larsson, he could fit nicely on either their second or third pairing. He would also provide them with another defenseman who can play in all situations, making it an excellent pickup for the Oilers during the summer.

Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings made a smart move at the deadline when they acquired defenseman Justin Faulk from the St. Louis Blues. Yet, they should still look to improve their defense over the summer. Ekman-Larsson could be a good fit on their roster because of it.

Whether he played on their left or right side, Ekman-Larsson would strengthen the Red Wings’ blueline if acquired. He would also give them another veteran who is a good leader, which would not be a bad thing at all for a Red Wings club on the rise.
