The Vancouver Canucks dropped a tough 5-4 decision in overtime against the league-leading Colorado Avalanche on Sunday night at Rogers Arena. The Canucks rallied with about three minutes to go in the third period to force overtime.
However, rookie Gavin Brindley got the game-winner a little more than a minute into overtime to end the game. Nathan MacKinnon led the way for Colorado with two goals and five points. Artturi Lehkonen also scored twice for the Avalanche. Meanwhile, Linus Karlsson got his first goal of the season, with Kiefer Sherwoo getting his 10th, Drew O’Connor (SHG), and Jake DeBrusk (PPG) rounding out the tallies for the Vancouver Canucks.
So, let’s look at the three least impressive Vancouver Canucks players from their overtime loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday night.
3 least impressive Vancouver Canucks players from OT loss to Colorado Avalanche
#3 Elias Pettersson
The Vancouver Canucks top-line center had a quiet night. While he looked decent in the face-off circle, Elias Pettersson didn’t overly impress in other areas of his game. Pettersson hit the ice for nearly 21 minutes across 23 shifts. While he had four shots on goal, he didn’t generate dangerous scoring opportunities.
He ended the night a minus-2, with his role in Lehkonen’s second of the night particularly frustrating. Here’s a look at the play as shown on the Colorado Avalanche’s official X account:
The replay showed Pettersson stumbling at the side of the net. That created space for the Avalanche to move the puck around. As the shot came, it almost appeared as if Pettersson was ducking for cover.
#2 Filip Hronek
The Vancouver Canucks blueliner had a sour night. Despite getting an assist in over 24 minutes of ice time across 27 shifts, he was unable to stop the Avalanche from getting the puck in the back of the net.
Specifically, Hronek looked out of place on MacKinnon’s second goal of the game. Here’s a look:
While Hronek is in a good spot in front of the net, he couldn’t react fast enough to the Avalanche’s puck movement. Victor Oloffson sold him on a shot in front of the net. Instead, the Avalanche winger passed across to MacKinnon, who buried the shot for the goal. MacKinnon curled around a defender a whistled the puck past Hronek for the goal.
#1 Brock Boeser
Brock Boeser had one assist for the Vancouver Canucks in 17:27 of ice time on Sunday night. He hit the ice for 24 shifts, getting two shots on goal. But it was his role in the game-winner that left fans scratching their heads.
Check out the game-winner:
Brindley went coast-to-coast with the puck, getting a shot on goal. Boeser was completely late to the puck, unable to clear it before Brindley picked up his own rebound and beat Kevin Lankinen to end the night.
The Canucks will be back on the ice on Tuesday night as they host the Winnipeg Jets at Rogers Arena.
