The Vancouver Canucks blew a 3-2 lead midway through the third period to lose 4-3 in overtime against the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night at PNC Arena.
Andrei Svechnikov scored twice for the Carolina Hurricanes, with Sebastian Aho getting the game-winner with about 30 seconds to go in the extra frame. Taylor Hall got the equalizer for the Canes. Meanwhile, Max Sasson, Elias Pettersson (SHG), and Conor Garland (PPG) scored for the Vancouver Canucks.
So, here’s a look at the three least impressive Vancouver Canucks players from their overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night.
3 least impressive Vancouver Canucks players from OT loss to Carolina Hurricanes
#3 Elias Pettersson
It’s perplexing to see a player like Elias Pettersson have a two-point game, including a nifty shorthanded goal, but also cost his team the game. That’s what happened on Friday night for Elias Pettersson.
The Vancouver Canucks top-line center tied the game at two with a shorthanded tally, but also ended up costing his team the game on a lost face-off and subsequent poor defensive play.
Here’s a look at the overtime winner as shown on the Hurricanes’ official X account:
Pettersson lost the draw to Sebastian Aho. The Canes’ blueliner got the puck back to Aho, who easily beat Pettersson and then rifled a shot past Kevin Lankinen. Had Pettersson won the draw or prevented Aho from getting a grade-A scoring chance, the Canucks might have had a chance to win the game in the shootout.
#2 Evander Kane
Evander Kane did not have his best game of the season. While he got four shots on goal in over 19 minutes of ice time, he didn’t have a particularly strong offensive game. He ended the night a minus-1 while getting a minor penalty.
The Vancouver native has had somewhat of an underwhelming season, scoring just three goals in 18 games. Moving forward, the Canucks will hope to get more production out of their offseason’s biggest acquisition.
#1 Tyler Myers
The Vancouver Canucks blueliner continues to commit egregious defensive miscues. On Friday, Myers was responsible for two awful turnovers that led to Carolina goals.
Here’s a look at the Hurricanes’ first goal:
The play started with a botched clearing attempt that the Canes retrieved. The Aho got the puck to Svechnikov to tie the game at one.
Then, Myers was beaten again, this time on Hall’s game-tying marker in the third. Here’s a look:
Myers looked completely out of place as he was unable to get around in time to make a play. All told, Myers hit the ice for over 22 minutes across 32 shifts on the night.
The Canucks will continue their East Coast trip on Sunday as they visit the Tampa Bay Lightning at Benchmark International Arena.
